Following their extended book tour to promote Superior: Journeys on an Inland Sea, Gary and Joanie embarked on a canoe trip across a chain of Northern Ontario watersheds from the Ottawa River through the Algoma Highlands to Lake Superior. In this route they were traversing some of the oldest remaining forests in Canada, and re-tracing a traditional voyageur trading trail. The trip took about two months, and by using a solar battery pack, laptop, digital camera and satellite phone they were able to update their web site daily with photographs and journal entries from deep in the bush--a very cool use of technology, I think. They created a traveling exhibition of the photographs taken during this trip (some of Gary's best, in my opinion)--although they were never made into a book--and asked me to put together some music to accompany it. Since the timeline was rather short, I basically took a bunch of half-baked ideas I'd been storing up, and fully baked them. |
